“Natural Gait Horsemanship” is the name used to describe the work Jack does with horses

Since his start in 1974. Having worked with many different breeds including gaited horses, he brings natural horsemanship concepts into his work regardless of breed or gait. As to how the Natural Horsemanship movement has influenced his approach, Jack replies:

“What we call Natural Horsemanship is really about understanding the horse, and learning a better way to communicate with them. Feel , timing, and balance are the buzz words of today's horsemen. The knowledge and application of what those words really mean is a critical part of how we go about getting a job done with our horses.”

After 20 years of traditional horsemanship and work as a professional wrangler, packer, and back country guide, Jack has developed his work to include taking on the roll of student. He says:

“Being a student requires that you are honest with yourself about your knowledge, ability, and experience. You may know a lot, but experience will determine how the application of that knowledge gets through to the horse. Every horse can offer something different, and working things out for the best possible outcome may require that we learn what the horse needs before we get them to offer us what we need.”

Gaited horses have become popular for many riders over the last several years. In general, there has been a disconnect between “gaited “ horse methods and “natural horsemanship” methods of working with them. Here is where Jacks “ Natural Gait Horsemanship” approach reaches out to help make a difference. His comments:

“Gaited or not, horses should be offered the best deal possible when we are working at making our idea their idea. Utilizing the best of what natural horsemanship concepts offer in working with gaited horses is very productive. “Taking the time it takes” applies here. Good horsemanship shouldn't change because a horse is gaited or not. The only difference is how they move their feet.
